We have one Major League Baseball All-Star Selection for this beautiful Friday of NFL opening weekend. Please remember that our All-Star picks are the ones that our proprietary algorithm tells us have better than a 60-percent chance of winning. Superstar Picks have a win probability of 70 percent or better.
We've cooled off a bit after a run of 16-straight wins, but are still 21-7 in our last 28 picks. We will update our plus-minus in terms of units this weekend.
Stat-Logic Sports MLB All-Star Pick for 9/6
Texas Rangers -145 vs. Los Angeles Angels (65%)
Aldegheri 0-1, 3.60 ERA) vs. Garabito (0-1, 2.55 ERA)
This one boils down to taking the better team that is playing better baseball. The Rangers have won three straight, including two against the American League East-leading New York Yankees and last night's 3-1 win vs. the Angels, and five of their last six games. Los Angeles has dropped 14 of its last 21 contests and is 4-8 in its last 12.
The Rangers plan on going with a bullpen game on the mound for this one, with Gerson Garabito making his second start of the season. He lasted a season-best 4 innings in his only other start Aug. 18 vs. Minnesota, allowing no runs and no hits while striking out three. For the year he has an impressive 2.55 ERA and has allowed just two earned runs in his last 12 outings. Garabito has given up just 5 earned runs while striking out 14 in 17.2 innings this year.
He faces a youngster in 22-year old lefty Samuel Aldegheri, who is making his second big-league start. Aldegheri allowed a respectable 2 earned runs on 6 hits while striking out 3 in his debut outing. While that computes to a solid 3.60 ERA, he walked 2 for a WHIP of 1.6. His xERA and xFIP were not as good, however, at 4.92 and 8.02, respectively, indicating that he was fortunate to not give up more runs.
Texas still sits on the outskirts of the postseason race, 8.0 games out of the final AL wildcard slot. The Rangers are the defending world champions and have a future Hall of Fame manager who is as competitive as anyone in the sport and will play to win. There is a lot of pride in that clubhouse. Texas has what should be a good lineup but has underperformed offensively this year. The offense has shown signs of life lately, scoring 30 runs in the last five games. The Rangers are middle of the pack in MLB in terms of average and OPS vs. left handers, while the Angels rank near the bottom against right handers.
