As injuries mount, the leaves change, the weather cools and the war of attrition that is a National Football League season trudges forward toward Week 5, more current data should mean more accurate power rankings and game predictions. This year, however, is one of the most volatile in recent memory, and there have been many surprises for the better and worse that still have many numbers-crunchers searching for answers.
Our Week 5 NFL Power rankings are below, and please understand they are based on a formula and process. We don't always completely agree with the numbers we end up with, which are a combination of simple on-field performance and box score analysis along with our model's numbers, what the bookmakers think and the opinions displayed by the sharp betting market.
That's not for us to debate, though.
After that, current injuries are factored in with the goal of providing a look at where the teams stand right this minute - not how they project in the future. This can fluctuate throughout the week as more injury information becomes available, and we try to keep them updated in real time while the games are being played Thursday, Sunday and Monday each week.
The numbers are the numbers, but it's pretty clear that the market still isn't completely sold on the Vikings or Commanders. The market also refuses to believe that the Jets, Bengals and Jaguars are as bad as they have looked to date.
